This is in response to the guest column July 28 by Rep. Scott Lansley. He wrote: “When Republicans balk at excessive debt, we get the squealing of the pigs being dragged away from the public trough.”

This implies that Democrats are squealing for money for themselves. The bond packages are for the people of the state of Maine. Some examples: Land for Maine’s Future, education, research and highways. And Dirigo Health is for those who are in dire need of medical assistance.

Is there anyone who has not known a friend or relative with a medical emergency or perhaps a terminal illness? The only possible way for that person to receive treatment is with the help of Medicaid or Medicare. The cost of drugs and treatments have risen way beyond people’s salaries or retirement pensions.

In the same issue, I read that Rep. Carol Grose met a boy who was taunted for weeks by classmates because his mother had moved him and his siblings into a shelter to escape an abusive home. Grose proposed a bill, recently signed into law by the governor, which is called the “anti-bully bill.”

It has been said that one can tell a lot about a society by the way it treats the most vulnerable members. One can tell a lot about people that way, too.
