HARPSWELL – Arthur Blatt passed away peacefully on Aug. 7, at The Vicarage-By-The-Sea, a residence for people with Alzheimer’s disease, in Harpswell.
Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., Sept. 15, 1914, he studied engineering at City College.
In 1939, he married Selma Shapiro of Auburn. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force in World War II as a celestial navigation instructor. They returned to Auburn after the war.
He worked as an executive in the shoe manufacturing industry.
He belonged to Beth Abraham Synagogue and Temple Shalom, and was active in many Jewish charitable organizations.
During the Korean War, he was appointed by President Eisenhower to the Selective Service Board.
In retirement, he spent winters with Selma in Sun City, Ariz.
He is survived by his wife, Selma; four children: Joan (Jeremy) Fields, Stephen (Lynn), Charles (Robin) and Gordon (Monica); eleven grandchildren; as well as one sister, Muriel Zuckerman of Florida.
