RUMFORD – A Rumford girl was seriously injured Sunday afternoon when the motorized scooter she was driving crashed, Detective Lt. Stacy Carter said Monday.

Carter declined to identify the 10-year-old girl, but said she was impaled by a handlebar in the 3:55 p.m. wreck on Swain Road.

It was not known how the wreck occurred.

Med-Care Ambulance Director Dean Milligan said late Monday afternoon that the handlebar “went in several inches.”

Milligan said Med-Care took the girl to Rumford Hospital, where she was then taken by LifeFlight helicopter to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.

The girl’s condition could not be obtained because police would not release her name.
