JAY – A 52-year-old man died Monday when the dump body of a truck came down on him while he was working on it at International Paper’s Androscoggin Mill landfill, police said.

Police were not releasing the Androscoggin County man’s name Monday pending notification of out-of-state family, Police Chief Larry White Sr. said.

The man was an employee of E.L. Vining & Son Inc. of Farmington, which is doing work at IP’s landfill, White said.

Police responded to the fatal accident at 10:58 a.m.

It appears the man was on the frame of the truck and was greasing some fittings on a 1996 Volvo tractor with a dump body when the dump body came down on him, White said.

“The accident is still under investigation at this time,” White said.

White and a representative of the state medical examiner’s office assisted the primary investigator, Jay police Cpl. Jeffrey Fournier, at the site. Jay firefighters responded to extricate the man, the chief said.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is also investigating the accident, White said.

E.L.Vining owners were not available for comment Monday.

“This has been a tough day for the Androscoggin Mill. Our condolences go to the E.L. Vining team and the man’s family and friends in their time of loss,” IP spokeswoman Fiona McCaul said.
