AVON – The condition of a Phillips man who struck a dump truck with his ATV Friday was upgraded Tuesday from critical to serious, according to a Central Maine Medical Center spokesman.
Ben Poland, 18, was traveling on a dirt road off Avon Valley Road when his ATV collided head-on with a dump truck driven by Rupert Potter, 57, also of Phillips.
Poland was taken by LifeFlight to the Lewiston hospital. He was not wearing a helmet. His passenger, Albert Bryant, 20, of Avon, was wearing a helmet and was taken by ambulance to Franklin Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and released Friday. Potter, the truck driver, was not injured in the accident.
It is unknown if the ATV riders had permission to operate on the private property, as is now required by Maine law. No information was available about possible pending charges because the warden who is investigating the incident is on vacation until Friday, according to Mark Latti, spokesman for the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.
