I enjoyed the story about Kelsi-Rae Moreshead’s journey published July 24. I was privileged to have Kelsi-Rae in my sixth-grade classroom. Her integrity and strength, her values and ethics are unmatched in my nine years teaching. In 2003, I moved to Santa Fe, N.M.. We’ve stayed in touch through many ups and downs. This summer, I was blessed to be back in Maine when Kelsi got “the call.” That event made the best vacation ever.

Last fall, her family was confronted with a disaster after their furnace blew. Total strangers from New Mexico, California, Maryland and Maine all contributed. It was enough for them to get a new furnace. Kelsi-Rae and her mom sent handwritten thank-you notes to everyone who helped.

People might be interested to know that Karen, her mom, had a successful hair styling career when Kelsi was diagnosed eight years ago. She accepts her new job gladly because a life truly does depend on it.

Kelsi-Rae is not “safe” yet. I know that many caring Mainers will be praying and sending their best wishes to her. Her presence among us is a great gift, and we should all look forward to the contributions sure to come from this lovely person.
