AUBURN – Residents get another chance to influence the latest draft of the City Charter on Thursday.

Charter commissioners will take their rewrite to a final public hearing at 7 p.m. Thursday in Auburn Hall.

The group has been making the public meeting rounds, getting feedback on the charter, according to commission Chairman John Cleveland. The group met with the Auburn School Committee last week, the Auburn City Council Monday and the Auburn Democratic Committee Tuesday.

Commissioners will take comments on their work to an Aug. 29 final review. The new charter will become the law next year if voters approve it at the polls in November.

Commissioners have restructured the entire document, making it easier to read. They’ve gotten rid of most legal jargon, modernized the language and summarized the entire document in a simple 83-word preamble.

The new charter would:

• Require a public vote before the city can borrow more than 10 percent of the current budget for new buildings and land purchases – about $6.1 million this year.

• Move the city’s general election from even-numbered to odd-numbered years.

• Require councilors to work with the school committee on financial audits, capital projects budgeting and adopting a new purchasing policy.

• Shift power from the charter to the City Council.

• Encourage cooperation with other cities.

The draft charter is available on the city’s Web site at www.auburnmaine.org/html/Charter_Commission.htm. Copies are also available in the city clerk’s office in Auburn Hall.
