BRECLAV, Czech Republic – Jonathan Bernier of the Lewiston Maineiacs made 31 saves, backing up a hat trick by teammate Jonathan Toews, as Team Canada defeated Switzerland 5-3 in the teams’ first game of the 2005 Junior World Cup on Tuesday.

Bernier was named player of the game for his efforts.

In a warm-up game earlier in the week, Canada lost to the Czech republic in a shootout. In that game, Bernier stopped all 12 shots.

Forward Stefan Chaput of the Maineiacs is also on the team, but he did not record a point in Tuesday’s win. The Canadian team’s next game is today at 4 p.m. against Sweden.
