LACONIA, N.H. (AP) – Police said a dispatcher answered a call from a woman who said something about a gun in her apartment, and the line went dead. Seconds later, a call came in from a neighbor who reported hearing shots from the apartment.

Police later arrested Dat Cong Van, 33, on charges that he fired the shots during an argument and struggle in his apartment early Wednesday.

No one was hurt.

Police said Van became angry when he awakened to find the woman who shares the apartment drinking with another man. They say he fired a shot at the man, then fired another shot as the two men struggled. The other man was able to take the gun away. No one was wounded.

Van is charged with attempted assault, resisting arrest and reckless conduct.

MERRIMACK, N.H. (AP) – It may be easier to find Penny Lane for a while.

The sign marking the street was one of more than 50 returned after police gave people a few weeks to bring them in, no questions asked.

“Most of them are street signs with people’s names on them,” said Deputy Chief Paul Stavenger.

They included Jakes Lane, Brenda Lane, Kyle Road, Little John Court, and the ever-popular Penny Lane, made famous by the Beatles tune of the same name.

“These are popular signs,” Stavenger said. “We will put them back up, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they are gone again by the end of the year.”

In addition to the street names, some traffic signs and a “no skateboarding” sign were returned.

Initially, the town said it was looking for about 40 signs that had been stolen since winter. But Stavenger said they got more than 50 back, including some from other towns.

OSSIPEE, N.H. (AP) – A pilot escaped as his float plane flipped over while taking off from Lake Ossipee on Tuesday.

Pilot Chip Johnson of Ossipee was not hurt. A boater pulled him from the water.

Witnesses said a wing dipped into the water as Johnson took off around 5 p.m., causing the plane to cartwheel, then flip upsidedown.
