This is in response to the guest column from Lewis Alessio printed July 31. I attended the initial judiciary hearing for L.D. 1196. Maine’s gay lobby did not present a strong case for discrimination in employment, education, housing or credit. What was presented was a very strong case by Gov. Baldacci and members of the judiciary for complete capitulation to homosexual interests.

Census data were presented that indicated gays earn higher-than-average salaries at $61,000 per year. Public data also reveal that gays have lots of money to spend on recreation and entertainment ($54 billion last year). Finally, as a group, gays are well educated.

It enrages me that Mr. Alessio intimated that Christ Jesus embraced homosexuality. Jesus was a devout Jew. The Jewish culture is known throughout the world for very high moral and sexual conduct. Ancient Jewish culture abhorred the homosexual behaviors of early Greece and Rome.

Christianity is about redemption, renewal and healing. Any Christian church that legitimizes homosexual behavior forsakes their own Christian message of transformation.

I wonder if Mr. Alessio would promote a new moral order that embraces all forms of sexual expression? Does he really see and aid in the promotion of homosexuality as a legitimate lifestyle choice?
