EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – Gas prices are sky high, but there’s another reason to put off filling up the tank until the last possible minute: foiling would-be kidnappers.

Police say that may be what saved Jerome Blair, 18, from a group of men who tried to kidnap him.

Blair was helping a friend fix a car stereo on Saturday evening when a group of men jumped in the car and flashed a gun, East Providence Police Det. Cpl. Michael Petow said. They drove off, but Blair managed to jump out of the car a block away.

The men tried to turn the car around to chase him, but the car ran out of gas, Petow said.

Robert Wray, 19, of East Providence, and Kwame Davis, 31, of Pawtucket, were charged with armed carjacking, kidnapping and conspiracy. Police are looking for a third man, Larmie Coleman, 20.

Laquaya Wray, 22, Robert Wray’s sister, was also charged. Police said she came to pick up the would-be kidnappers after they ran out of gas.
