My heart goes out to all the families and to all of the victims of the accident on Interstate 95 last month. As I read the newspaper this morning (Aug.7), I began to wonder what Mr. Hewitt was thinking by driving with his suspended license. I, too, have a commercial driver’s license, and I own my own truck. That accident, like many out there, put a big, black mark on all the truck drivers who are just trying to work and provide for their families.

I haven’t walked in Mr. Hewitt’s shoes, and I really feel thankful each week that nothing as major has ever happened to me or to my family. After reading the first few articles and the latest news stories of the accident, I really thought that perhaps Hewitt made a fatal error in judgment. Now, after reading the latest article, due to his negligence, his family will suffer as well.

The general motoring public really doesn’t give a second thought to what kind of damage a tractor-trailer can cause until it is too late. When any news story comes out about the latest accidents involving tractor-trailers, people are much more nervous in regards to sharing the roadways with a truck.

Regardless of whether you drive four wheels or 18 wheels, the end result is the same. If you don’t operate your individual vehicle in a safe manner, tragedy will strike.
