JAY – Megan Frey, an eighth-grade student at Jay Middle School, has received recognition from the Maine State Organization of the Daughters of the American Revolution for her award-winning essay, “Along the Trail with Lewis and Clark and the Corps of Discovery.”
Colonial Daughters Chapter of Farmington submitted the essay to the state organization.
Other chapters also submitted entries to be judged, based on historical accuracy, organization of material, interest, originality, spelling, grammar, punctuation and neatness.
One essay at each grade level was selected as the state winner. Frey received a third-place certificate and a monetary award from the state group and a bronze medal from the Farmington chapter.
Each year the state organization sponsors an American history essay contest to promote the study and knowledge of American history.
All grade five, six, seven and eight students in a public, private or parochial school and those who are home schooled are eligible.
Local chapters are encouraged to go into their schools, promote the contests and encourage student to participate. The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution in Washington chooses the topics.
This year’s topic was “Along the Trail with Lewis and Clark and the Corps of Discovery, May 1804-September 1806.”
The participant was to take on the role of one of the explorers and imagine the things they would have seen and experienced. Frey chose the role of Sacagawea. She will be a freshman at Jay High School in September.
