PHILLIPS – Elizabeth “Betty” Montgomery, 89, of Phillips, died Tuesday, Aug. 9, at Sandy River Center for Health Care in Farmington.

She was born Oct. 6, 1915, in Phillips, the daughter of Fred and Louise (Atwood) Beal. Betty graduated from Phillips High School and Simmons College. She worked as a librarian at Bates, Radcliffe and Amherst Colleges.

She was the loving wife of Hugh, who predeceased her.

After her retirement Betty and her husband, Hugh, moved back to Phillips. Both Betty and Hugh were instrumental in updating the Phillips Library.

Betty was a longtime member of the Phillips Congregational Church and active in the women’s group. She was also a member of the Phillips Historical Society and was interested in the Sandy River and Rangeley Narrow Gauge Railroad.

She is survived by several cousins.
