PORTLAND – Approximately 150 boys and girls, ages 8 to 14, from across the area attended the Bank of America Youth Baseball Clinic to learn the fundamentals of the game from former Boston Red Sox catcher Bob Montgomery and former Boston College Head Coach Moe Maloney. The clinic was held at Deering Oaks.
The three-hour clinic, a partnership between Bank of America and the Red Sox, featured drills and instruction on hitting, fielding, throwing and base running from Montgomery. Following the skills portion, Montgomery took questions and spoke with the young athletes about his career in the Major Leagues and how his experiences with baseball have helped him to be successful on and off the field.
“These clinics are a terrific way to reach out to kids and give them a chance to not only improve their performance on the baseball field, but also learn valuable lessons about hard work, discipline and teamwork,” said Montgomery.
The young people who attended the clinics are members of the Boys and Girls Club of Maine (Portland and South Portland), Boys and Girls Club Auburn-Lewiston, Gorham Recreation and the Portland Recreation Department.
Youth who participated received lunch and T-shirts and had the opportunity to obtain player autographs. In addition, Bank of America donated $1,000 in baseball equipment at the clinic to be shared among participating community organizations.
