The people of Maine should be alert to the potential disaster that is brewing in the Moosehead region. Should we allow a Seattle-based corporation that arrived in Maine a mere seven years ago to determine the irrevocable future of an irreplaceable resource?
Should we forfeit Maine’s esteemed heritage of wild land access for all Maine people so that Plum Creek’s investors can sell Maine land for maximum profit? People would no longer be able to enjoy those clear lakes and streams, nor would their children or their children’s children, because that land would be private, and only the wealthy would have access.
Will our local sportsmen be able to afford to use the exclusive sporting camps? Do we really want more and more out-of-staters crawling all over our favorite spots?
The waters are so clear in the Moosehead region because they are not polluted by any proposed golf course, resort, RV park, shopping mall, industrial park, sporting camps, residential lawn runoff or sewage that would result.
The self-determining locals have been able, by themselves, to make a living in that area for many years. Are they destined to become just more service workers devoted to providing comforts for the privileged?
Why on Earth should we just give Maine away?
Plum Creek’s development plan is a tragedy just waiting to happen.
