MECHANIC FALLS – Army Chief Warrant Officer James Dunn, formerly of Mechanic Falls, received the Knowlton Award during his year-long deployment in Iraq. The award recognizes individuals who have contributed significantly to the promotion of military intelligence in ways that stand out in the eyes of the recipient’s seniors, subordinates and peers.
The individuals must have also demonstrated the highest standards of integrity and moral character, displayed an outstanding degree of professional competence and served the Army Military Intelligence Corps, either by military or civilian service.
The award was established in June 1995 by the Military Intelligence Corps Association. It exemplifies the gallantry, bravery and strong determination to succeed associated with the military intelligence soldier or civilian.
The individual has to have demonstrated a significant, conspicuous contribution in support of the Military Intelligence Corps, having the highest standards of integrity, moral character, professional competence and absolute dedication to duty.
As the all-source intelligence technician for the RSTA Squadron, Dunn was responsible for the targeting of enemy forces in the northwestern part of Iraq. The 2nd Squadron, 14th Cavalry is responsible for an area of operations of nearly 17,000 square kilometers. Dunn was given the task of finding the anti-Iraqi forces throughout the area.
In preparation for the brigade’s fight in Iraq, Dunn was the intelligence expert for the squadron during numerous exercises in preparation for deployment.
Dunn is married to Gretchen Millett Dunn and they have a son, Matthew, 11. They currently reside at Fort Lewis, Wash., and will soon relocate to Virginia Beach, Va. He is the son of Phil and Mona Dunn of Mechanic Falls. Dunn has been in the Army for 15 years.
