The small boys are beginning to make Lewiston and Auburn owners of fine fruit trees worry for “swiping apples” is again getting to be a popular sport for young America. But it isn’t only the boys who cause trouble, it is said. Older people in some sections of the two cities have got into the habit of helping themselves to their neighbors garden truck more or less.

Nearly half a million shares of stocks were sold in the first hours of dealings on the stock exchange. The transactions of the first hour are the most significant of the day and the crucial test of the tone of the market in the majority of cases.

50 Years Ago, 1955

Rain, rain go away, Lewiston kids all want to play. This was the chant that sounded from the throats of more than 1,500 Lewiston children as they kept one eye on the gray skies and another on the fun-packed games lining the “midway” at the Lewiston City Park playground.

Morning showers, gray skies, and wet grass didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the hundreds of kids who turned out to shout, run and play games on the Recreational Department’s annual Play Day.

25 Years Ago, 1980

Former Gov. James B. Longley, an insurance man who ran Maine state government for four stormy years as the nation’s only independent governor, died after an eight-month battle with cancer. He was 56. Longely died at his Lewiston home, 40 Robinson Gardens at 10:30 p.m., according to close friend and business associate Paul Buckley.

Flags over state buildings were lowered to half-staff, as Gov. Joseph E. Brennan and other Maine political and religious leaders mourned the passing of former Gov. James B. Longley. “All of Maine will remember Governor Longley as a unique and very special leader.” Brennan said in a statement issued.
