BOOTHBAY – Harold L. Larrabee, 83, of Boothbay, passed away peacefully at his home, Tuesday, Aug. 16, after a long illness.

He was born in Portland, Jan. 5, 1922, the son of Harold Whitney and Jennie May Larrabee. He attended Skowhegan High School and in 1942 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy.

He was a plank owner on the light cruiser, USS Denver, and served aboard that ship in the South Pacific until December 1945. His ship fired the first shot in retaking the Philippines and received 11 battle stars and awards. He was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, the Asiatic/Pacific Theater Medal with two bronze stars and one silver star, the Philippine Liberation Medal with two stars, and the American Theater and Good Conduct Medals.

After the war, he moved to Bridgeport, Conn., and was employed by Harvey Hubbell Co. and the Bridgeport Brass Co. He retired from Remington Electric Shaver Co. in Milford, Conn., after 20 years service.

He was a life member of the American Legion and a member of the Boothbay Civic Association. A skilled woodworker, he was happiest working on projects in his shop or repairing radios and electronic equipment. He moved to Boothbay Harbor in 1995 and married his childhood sweetheart, Alice True Larkin.

He is survived by his wife, Alice Larrabee of Boothbay; son, Alan Larrabee of Leeds, N.Y.; sisters, Dorothy Frost and her husband, Raymond, of Mechanic Falls, Janice Godwin of Bryant Pond, Jeanette Hinckley of Otisfield, Peggy Cummins of Lewiston, Violet Rose of California and Carolyn Egnew of Littleton, N.H.; stepsons, Edrick J. Larkin of Southport, Paul T. Larkin of Woolwich and Shawn E. Larkin of Lewiston; stepdaughters, June E. Wing of Bath and Laura Larkin of Topsham; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a stepdaughter, Julia Berry.
