LEWISTON – Roger L. Gilbert, 67, of New Gloucester, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 17.
He was born July 29, 1938, in Lewiston, the son of Origene and Imelda Gilbert. He graduated from St. Dominic’s High School in 1957 and Northeastern University in 1967 with a bachelor of science in economics.
After completing courses in industrial engineering and serving his military obligation, he worked at Bates Manufacturing in the industrial engineering department from 1963 to 1967. He then became general manager of Maine operations for Jones and Vining from 1967 to 1975 and manager of Technical Services at Gold Seal Rubber (Bonon Footwear) with plants in Auburn and Jasper, Ga. In 1978, he joined Falcon Shoe Manufacturing as a project engineer, and continued on as engineer and plant manager until his health forced retirement.
He played hockey for St. Doms, Northeastern and the LA Twins. As a big hockey fan, he especially enjoyed watching the Lewiston Maineiacs. He also had a passion for deer hunting, golf, skiing, fishing and snowmobiling. He frequently enjoyed helping friends and relatives on home projects.
If asked how to spend his days, he would choose to be with his sons Dan, Doug and Jim.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Carol Kaiser Gilbert; sons, James (Michele McGovern) of Santa Barbara, Calif., Douglas (Michelle Daigneault) of Turner and Daniel of Chelsea, Mass.; grandchildren, Madison and Kendall of Santa Barbara, Calif.; sisters, Georgette Sheremeta of Colchester, Conn., and Lorraine Lavoie (Richard Lavoie) of St. Claire Shores, Mich.; brother, Normand (Cecil Dufour) of Lewiston; and many nephews and nieces from around the country.
He was predeceased by brothers, Richard O. Gilbert and Laurent W. Gilbert.
