TOPSHAM — A lively cast of young actors will bring “The Lady Pirates of Captain Bree” to Mount Ararat High School’s stage at 7 p.m. today and at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20. This swashbuckling musical comedy is the third annual children’s production of Midcoast Youth Theater.

The show tells the tale of the notorious Captain Bree (Sarah Cropley) and her ruthless gang of female pirates, who capture a ship called the Kayla May. When the ship’s crew jumps overboard upon sighting the approaching pirates, Capt. Jennings (Christian Nadell) is left with a makeshift crew of motley prisoners: a Swedish cook (Daniel Plumer) whose accent is heavier than his meatballs, and Fergus (Benjamin Nadell), a sailor who can’t swim. Passengers include the haughty Professor Bidwell (Nick Toole) and the pretentious Madam Prescot (Libby Freiberger), constantly battling for special treatment; Samuel Prescot (Baxter Worthing), masquerading as a girl to avoid becoming shark bait; and Julia Prescot (Sarah Hill), bursting with desire to join the lady pirates, much to her aunt’s dismay. Bill Francoeur’s score adds a touch of authenticity to this spirited pirate play.

The show is directed by Henry Eichman, with musical direction by David Olsen Petrowski and choreography by Pam Tondreau and Leah Tondreau.

Mount Ararat High School is located on Eagles Way (off Route 201), Topsham. Tickets are available at the door: $8 adults, $5 seniors and students. FMI call 729-1819.
