LAST CHANCE: The Pentagon on Saturday took one more crack at convincing the base-closure commission that Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld’s plan to close or shrink hundreds of military installations makes economic sense.
NOT SO FAST: Opponents of the plan claim that the projected savings are inflated and argue that the changes will weaken homeland security.
DECISION UPCOMING: The independent commission will decide what parts of the proposal will be sent to the president and to Congress in the coming months. In previous years, base-realignment plans were altered slightly by commissions.
