LEWISTON – After more than a year of searching for a new home, Marco’s restaurant will officially announce its new location at a news conference this afternoon.
The popular restaurant that was burned out of its Lisbon Street location in a July 6, 2004, fire will be opening its doors in the former Cartest building at the Fairgrounds Business Park on Mollison Way.
Owned most recently by Steve Taylor and Duane Arnold, Marco’s was a prime gathering spot for downtown businesspeople. Its Italian fare brought in steady lunch and dinner crowds for the 26 years it operated at 177 Lisbon St. And its downstairs meeting room hosted many wedding receptions and business conferences over the years.
The July fire destroyed the upper floors of the building and caused extensive damage to the first-floor restaurant and kitchen. At the time, the owners estimated it would cost upwards of $1.3 million to rebuild at that site.
Taylor and Arnold are receiving some city-backed financing to reopen at the new location. Details about the new Marco’s will be revealed at the 1 p.m. news conference.
In a December interview with the Sun Journal, Arnold said the pair was looking outside the downtown for Marco’s new home because of the cost of downtown space, coupled with its lack of parking.
