LUDLOW, Mass. (AP) – A woman being held in the Hamden County Jail on drug charges and her involvement in the alleged takeover of an elderly man’s home died in custody after she was taken to the Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, the county sheriff said.
Hampden County Sheriff Michael J. Ashe Jr. confirmed Sunday night that Cynthia J. Brace, 41, formerly of Ware, died while in custody, but he said he did not know the cause of death.
Rich McCarthy, a spokesman for Ashe, said Monday that an autopsy showed she did not die from asphyxiation or being hit, but said the medical examiner’s report wouldn’t be complete until toxicology testing was completed.
McCarthy said Brace “went into respiratory arrest” at the jail on Saturday, and was taken by ambulance to the hospital. He said two nurses and a physician’s assistant tried to keep her alive by performing CPR.
Brace was arrested Thursday, but the rest of the family remains at large, police said.
