AVON – The selectmen spent most of their Aug. 9 meeting planning the upcoming Avon Commmunity Celebration that will take place Saturday, Sept. 10, at the new Avon Municipal Building.

The day will begin at 10 a.m. with family games and activities and end with a dance featuring the Tom Ball Band from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Family activities will include a Frisbee throwing contest for accuracy for children, a log throwing contest for men, a weed-wacker throwing contest for women, a baby creeping/crawling race for babies, and redneck horseshoes and a pickled-egg-eating contest, both for all ages.

Prizes have been donated for the events, and ribbons will be awarded as well. Face painting will be available. There will be a 50/50 raffle and a raffle of gift certificates from local businesses.

A chicken barbecue, hamburgers, hot dogs and home baked beans will be available at lunch for a nominal fee.

The SAD 58 Community Steel Drum Band will perform from 11 a.m. to noon. Emery Thompson and The Silvertones will play old-time favorite music from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. The concerts are free to the public; donations will be accepted.

The Scrapbookmobile will be on site, as well as the Healthy Community Coalition van. Local crafters and vendors will have items for sale.

Representatives of the Franklin County Animal Shelter will be there with some kittens who are looking for homes. Smokey Bear and McGruff the crime-fighting dog will be on the grounds to meet with children.

In other business, selectmen appointed Lisa Berry to the Planning Board to fill the term of Mark Brown, who has resigned.

Selectmen are looking for another volunteer to serve on the Planning Board.

Anyone interested is asked to call one of the board members.
