JAY – Ray Pineau, a state representative and selectman, is in a Bangor hospital after suffering a stroke early Wednesday, Town Manager Ruth Marden confirmed Wednesday night.

Ed Pineau declined comment on his brother Wednesday.

Ray Pineau, a Democrat, is in his third term as a legislator and represents constituents in District 87 in the towns of Chesterville, Jay, New Sharon, Starks and Mercer.

A longtime millwright at International Paper in Jay, he has been a town selectman since at least 1998 and served as chairman of the board at one time. He served in combat in Vietnam.

“He is such a hard worker on every level at work, the state and the town and for his constituents,” Marden said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with him for a speedy recovery.”

Marden said she was unable to confirm the severity of the stroke.

Marden said Pineau has helped a number of people work their way through the system, including those who had issues with Medicaid, veterans, and those who needed fuel assistance.

Pineau was in New Sharon on Aug. 9 working with state Sen. Chandler Woodcock, R-Franklin, state police, Department of Transportation traffic engineers, Franklin County Commissioner Fred Hardy, Sheriff Dennis Pike, New Sharon selectmen and others to find ways to make the intersection of Routes 2, 27 and 134 and Main Street safer after a number of serious accidents occurred there.

A supervisor at St. Joseph’s hospital in Bangor said Wednesday night that Pineau’s family had asked that no information on his condition be released.
