Search suspended for fisherman

BOSTON (AP) – The Coast Guard has suspended its search for a Maine fisherman missing since the 50-foot scallop boat he was aboard sank off Nantucket.

Two other crew members, Andrew Joseph and Sean Balestraci, both of Eastham, were rescued from a life raft early Wednesday morning after they were spotted by another fishing boat.

Edward Smith, of Deer Isle, Maine, the vessel’s master, has not been seen since the sinking, said Coast Guard spokeswoman Kelly Newlin.

The Northern Wind left Hyannis late Sunday and was expected back on Monday night.

“We’re not exactly sure how the boat sank or started to sink,” Newlin said.
