MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Stephen M. Bichrest Sr., 90, of Lisbon Falls, died on his birthday, Wednesday, Aug. 24, at Horry County Regional Medical Center, Myrtle Beach, S.C.
He was born in Lewiston, Aug. 24, 1915, the son of Michael J. and Anna (Durisko) Bichrest. He attended Lisbon Falls elementary schools and Lisbon Falls High School.
On Sept. 3, 1938, he was married at St. John’s Church, Brunswick, to the former Claire A. Nadeau. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army from June to December 1945.
During his life, he was employed in the textile industry from 1933 to 1972 as a weaver, having worked at the former Worumbo Mill in Lisbon Falls. In 1972, he went to work for Bowdoin College as a custodian, retiring in 1977.
Throughout his lifetime he made his home for more than 50 years at 17 North St., Lisbon Falls. He later moved to the Farwell Mill, Lisbon, where he made his home for seven years. He enjoyed gardening and traveling throughout the eastern seaboard, most recently visiting with his son and his wife in Myrtle Beach.
He was a member of Holy Trinity Church and the Lisbon Senior Citizens.
He is survived by his wife, Claire, of Lisbon Falls; a daughter, Joan Karkos of Lewiston; two sons, Stephen M. Jr., and his wife, Sheila, of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Marcel P. and his wife, Glyn, of Lisbon Falls; 10 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Mary Cloutier and Catherine Breau.
