AUBURN – There will be a meeting for Team Captains on Monday, Aug. 29, starting at 6:30 p.m. at the New Auburn Social Club. Captains are asked to bring team rosters.

Co-Ed Volleyball

LEWISTON – An organizational meeting for the Lewiston Recreation Department Co-Ed Volleyball Program will be held Thursday, Sept. 1, at 7 pm in room B of the Multi-Purpose Center.

Anyone organizing a team or wanting to play on a team should be present. Teams that have passed in a completed roster and have paid all their league fees may sign up for practices which start Sept. 7-8. Tim Lare is the Co-Ed Volleyball Director. Any questions should be directed to Jeanne Strout at 784-2926, extension 204.

Table tennis

LEWISTON – The Maine Table Tennis League will begin its 10th season on Sept. 12 at the Multi Purpose Center. The program is available to all age brackets, male and female. Adult dues for the year are $40 and $30 for those age 12 and under. The fee is due on opening night.

League play takes place on Monday evening from 5 to 9 p.m. Practice and play times are also available on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights. The league has a qualified USATT referee, and 11 Stiga tables. Special events planned include a Maine Fall Open on Oct. 8 and a Maine Spring Open on May 6. Lewiston Smashers Tennis

The Smashers won the New England Championships on Wednesday after being two games down to the top team, Rahani’s from Eastern Massachusetts. In the first match of the day, the Smashers easily defeated the third place team from Pittsfield, Mass. by a score of 36 games won to nine. In girls doubles, Frankie Lally and Abby Blaisdell easily defeated Emily Ellis and Emily Ryan, 4-1, 4-1.

In mixed doubles, Elliott Chicoine and Emilie Cloutier breezed through their match by defeating their opponents, 4-1, 4-0. After this match, the Smashers were tied with Rahanis at 178 games for the final match, which would determine the New England Champion. The final standings were as follows: Lewiston Smashers 217; Rahani 200; Longmeadow (Mass.) 172; Richfield (Conn.) 166; Pittsfield 154; Stowe (VT) 153; New Hampshire 121.

The Smashers attended the Pilot Pen on Tuesday night and watched Lyndsey Davenport win her match. After her match, she gave her autograph to each player. The Smashers will be representing New England at the Regional Championships in Wilmington, Delaware on Oct. 7-9.
