CANTON – Irene S. Johnston, 97, formerly of Concord Apartments in Rumford, died Thursday, Aug. 25, at the Victorian Villa Rehabilitation & Living Center, Canton. She was a lifelong resident of the Rumford area and recently resided in Canton.

She was born in Rumford, on April 20, 1908, the daughter of George B. and Sarah (Stratton) Storer, and had graduated from Stephens High School in Rumford Class of 1926.

She had been employed at the Rumford Power & Light Company and then for the Rumford Falls Trust, which became the Maine National Bank where she worked as a teller until retirement in 1973.

Irene was a life member of Mt. Zircon Chapter, O.E.S., a member of the Town and Garden Club, a former member of the Rumford Book Club and the Murray Club.

She was married in Rumford, on Sept. 19, 1928, to the late John M. Johnston Sr.; he died in Rumford on May 13, 1956.

Survivors include a son, John M. Johnston Jr. and wife, Sonja, of Rumford; two grandsons, John M. Johnston III of Lewiston, and Jay C. Johnston of Rumford; two granddaughters Judith Richardson and husband, Wayne, of South Portland, Jolene Troiano and husband, Pasquale, of Scarborough; a great-grandson, John Johnston IV of Lewiston; five great-granddaughters, Darien and Sarena Richardson of South Portland, Christina Troiano of Scarborough, and Sarah and Vanessa Johnston of Lewiston.
