LEWISTON – A Lewiston man was in the hospital Friday after he was reportedly jumped by a group of men, threatened with a knife and beaten the night before.

Police said 34-year-old Wendall Spiller suffered head injuries and other wounds when he was attacked Thursday night at Oak and Holland streets.

He was listed in stable condition Friday night at Central Maine Medical Center, a nursing supervisor said.

It was unknown what led to the attack. Police said Spiller told them he did not recognize any of his assailants.

On Friday, police officers and detectives were searching for suspects and potential witnesses to the assault. Investigators said Spiller was walking on Oak Street when he was jumped.

Police Lt. Tom Avery said one of the attackers pulled out a knife and threatened the man while the others kicked and punched him. The assault took place shortly before 11 p.m.

Thursday night in Lewiston was marked by several brawls across the downtown area. Police responded to one melee on College Street in which combatants were said to have been armed with bats, knives and chemical spray.

Police at that scene recovered some of the weapons and spoke with possible witnesses. No arrests were made at the scene.

Later, around the same time as the attack on Oak Street, police went to Walnut Street, where a female was reportedly being beaten by a group of people. The fight had ended by the time officers arrived.
