WINTHROP – The pilot and lone occupant of a single-engine plane was killed Saturday in a crash.

The 1962 Cessna 172 fixed-wing single-engine plane went down at about 9:20 a.m. in a field near the Old Lewiston Road, landing upside down, according to local police and the Federal Aviation Administration.

The pilot was dead at the scene, officials said.

The pilot, Marc McDonnell, 51, of Winthrop, was not in contact with air traffic control, and it was not known where the plane was from or where it was headed, FAA spokeswoman Holly Baker said. Weather was apparently not a factor.

Officials from FAA’s Portland office arrived at the scene Saturday, police said.

The National Transportation Safety Board was expected this morning to investigate the cause of the crash. The Maine Medical Examiner’s office was expected to perform an autopsy. No further information was immediately available.
