DURHAM – Wayne Floyd York, formerly of Cousins Island, Yarmouth, died peacefully at his home on Monday, Aug. 22, from Lou Gehrig’s Disease, otherwise known as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS.)

He was born on April 19, 1934, in Portland, a son of Lendall M. York Jr. and Doris E. York of Portland. He attended local schools, graduating from Deering High School in 1952. He was a member of the Lake Marine Fraternity.

He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1954 as a member of the Twelfth Air Force in Europe, where he became experienced in radio and I.B.M. mainframe maintenance and operations. Upon his discharge, he had attained the rank of sergeant.

From 1956 to 1962, he worked in the family residential construction business, while attending the University of Maine in Portland. He later worked for the State of Maine at the Maine Youth Center in South Portland.

On Sept. 13, 1969, he married Dorothy M. York of Portland. Wayne and his family lived on Cousins Island in Yarmouth while he worked in various management positions in the areas of public works, civil engineering and solid waste recycling. He retired as director of solid waste and recycling for Mid-Maine Waste Action Corporation.

He enjoyed automobile restoration, wood carpentry, family genealogy, history and the outdoors. He was a member of the Free Masons, Casco Lodge No. 34, and the American Public Works Association.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, of Durham; a son, William F. York, and son-in-law, Walter L. Erdman, of Sarasota, Fla.; sisters-in-law, Jacqueline R. York of Edwardsville, Ill., and Delores M. York of South Portland; nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; as well as many dear friends and colleagues.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Lendall M. York III of San Diego, Calif., and Wesley E. York of Raymond.
