Family’s paintings fetch $605,000

THOMASTON (AP) – A pair of late 18th-century paintings sold for $605,000 at a weekend auction, tying a record for the second-most expensive antique offered at auction in Maine, according to the auction house that handled the sale.

The bidding on the fireboard and three-panel overmantel by Jonathan Welch Edes took place Saturday at Thomaston Place Auction Galleries.

“We had four or five phone bidders and three or four in the audience,” said Chris McIntosh, general manager of the auction house. “It went to an audience member who promptly paid for it and took it out the door.”

Scam alleged

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) – A Penacook man has been charged with bilking elderly clients of almost $150,000.

According to police, Scott Prince, 36, reached potential investors while working for a Concord insurance agency. Police said Prince told his elderly victims he was reinvesting their money in higher-paying annuities but pocketed it instead.

The state attorney general’s office said the deceptions appear to date back to 1999 and continued through April, after Prince was fired from the company.

NORTHFIELD, N.H. (AP) – A New Hampton woman died early Sunday morning after her car rolled over in Northfield.

State police said Kathleen Connor, 47, was thrown from her car after it hit the median on Interstate 93 and rolled.

Police said it appears Connor went into the median once and got back onto the highway but then overcorrected and lost control, veering into the median a second time and rolling over.

Police said she was not wearing a seatbelt. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

State police said the accident remains under investigation, but it does not appear that excessive speed or alcohol consumption were factors in the crash.

Dress codes

LITCHFIELD, N.H. (AP) – Back-to-school shoppers will have to consider the new dress code in their schools.

School board Chairman Cindy Couture said the new code tightens the rules. Students can’t wear lingerie, pajamas, hats or hoods. Skirts can’t be shorter than mid-thigh and chains and spikes are barred.

But rules vary at other schools. Hats are allowed in Londonderry as long as students don’t wear them in classes.

Hanover officials are trying to keep it simple. Students there must follow the Three-B’s. That means keeping backsides, breasts and bellies covered.
