STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – AccuWeather.com’s long-range forecasters warn that this winter will be especially cold for the northeastern United States.

The AccuWeather forecast for just about all of the United States east of the Mississippi will average at least one degree below normal from December through February. The greatest departure from typical winter temperatures will be in the area between Maine and Washington, D.C., which will experience temperatures two to three degrees below normal.

The predictions are chilling.

Cold Canadian air will cool the Northeast, and normal water temperatures off the Pacific coastline – creating an absence of La Nina and El Nino effects – will also push down temperatures along the East Coast.

The middle section of the country will experience typical winter temperatures. The forecast for the western United States calls for a warmer-than-typical winter, with predicted temperatures in eastern California, Nevada, Utah and southern Idaho and Oregon averaging three to four degrees above normal.
