BOSTON (AP) – The Red Sox designated left-hander Mike Remlinger for assignment Sunday and recalled lefty Abe Alvarez from Triple-A Pawtucket.

Remlinger had a 14.85 ERA and no record in eight relief appearances since being acquired from the Chicago Cubs for minor league pitcher Olivo Astacio.

Alvarez was 11-5 with a 4.72 ERA for Pawtucket.

in 25 appearances this year, all starts. He spent one day with Boston in July but didn’t pitch before returning to Pawtucket. He appeared in one game for Boston last season, starting and lasting five innings and allowing five runs on eight hits.
