I was very upset to learn that truck drivers have been given more hours to drive (Aug. 20) and expected to work 14 hours a day.

Where is the common sense here? I work an eight-hour day, five days a week and I can’t imagine what my state of alertness would be if I had to work 14 hours a day, much less get behind the wheel of any vehicle, especially a big rig, after doing so.

Eleven hours behind the wheel of a big rig, day in and day out, is tragedy waiting to happen. With the recent apparent crackdown on drivers with suspended licenses, why the reversal of course with the extended hours for truck drivers?

My family and I will never feel safe on the roadways. The federal agency responsible for making this rule appears to be asleep at the wheel, and it is past time that the safety of all motorists becomes priority.
