I wanted to take a moment and thank the Sun Journal for its terrible coverage of the Maine State Little League tournament this past month. By not following the local, Elliot Avenue Little League team, the Sun Journal forced many fans to buy other newspapers. This allowed us to see how real newspapers cover local sports.
One would have thought that making it to the state finals game would warrant more space from the hometown press. Instead, we got Kalle Oakes (Aug. 19) writing a column about all that is wrong with the Little League world.
It may not be perfect, but don’t worry. If Oakes has children that want to play ball someday, there will still be dozens of coaches, groundskeepers, umpires and team mothers who would love to spend a few hundred volunteer hours helping to teach his son or daughter. That’s just the way we are.
Maybe then the Sun Journal can write and highlight the positive aspects of the summer game we all enjoy.
