MOUNT JACKSON, Va. – Rhoda Farrand Holt Tibbetts, 77, of Mount Jackson, Va., died Monday, Aug. 29, at home surrounded by friends and family.
She was born on June 29, 1928 in Rumford, the daughter of the late Oscar and Madge (Farrand) Holt. She graduated from Edward Little High School in Auburn.
She was married to Richard G. Tibbetts on Aug. 22, 1948 in Auburn. She was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church and was active in the church, teaching Sunday school and vacation Bible school. She was a 50-year member of the United Methodist Women, and served as president and membership chairperson of the Harrisonburg District of the United Methodist Women.
She was a past regent of the Elizabeth McIntosh Hammill Chapter, Daughters of American Revolution in Manassas, Va., and a past regent of the Narrow Passage Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution in Woodstock, Va. She was also a member of Virginia Mayflower Society and past matron of the Order of the Eastern Star.
She was instrumental in getting a food pantry established in Mount Jackson, Va. She served as president of the Open Door Food Pantry of Mount Jackson for 14 years. She remained active after becoming ill, serving as an advisor.
She had been active in the Girl Scouts of America for 51 years as a leader, trainer, day camp director and member of the council board. She was awarded the highest award for an adult involved in scouting, the Marguerite Cyr Award. She was also presented with the Thanks Badge.
She is survived by her husband of Mount Jackson, Va.; daughter, Deborah T. Osborne and husband, Marvin, of Danville, Va.; a son, Duane Tibbetts and his wife, Doris, of Manassas, Va.; grandsons, William, Richard and Preston Osborne of Danville, Va.; grandson, John Tibbetts; granddaughter, Jessica Tibbetts of Manassas, Va.; one aunt, Jean Dyke of Maine; nieces, Raelene Keniston and Shelley Griffith of Maine; and nephews, Dale and Shawn Gowell of Maine.
