FARMINGTON – Golf: It isn’t just a fair weather sport anymore.

Golfers itching to perfect their swing or just keep in shape over the winter can do so at a new club in Farmington. Putter’s Bar and Grill at 218 Fairbanks Road opened Monday and offers indoor simulated golf to the experienced and novice links-lumberer. With clubs available for toddlers to adults, anyone can play.

But Greg Roux, the club’s owner, said Wednesday that he expects experienced golfers to enjoy the 3,400-square-foot facility most. Scenes of a variety of golf courses are projected from a computer program onto a 9-by-12-foot screen, which records a multitude of data, including ball distance and club swing speed when the ball strikes sensors on the screen. The system can also store players’ statistics for those who want to track them.

It’s very realistic, he said.

While testing the system last week, his ball hit a rake in a sand pit and the projected ball bounced off it and down the handle of the rake, he said.

Not an avid golfer himself, Roux got the idea from construction crew members who work for his other company, Farmington Construction. Many were regularly heading to a Waterville course to play after work, he said. Now he hopes his employees will also become his patrons.

Cost for golf is a flat fee of $25 for an hour on a simulator. Up to four people can play at one, and Roux estimates it will take an experienced golfer one hour to play 18 holes.

But golf is not the only offering at his establishment. With a menu rife with golfing terminology, patrons can enjoy lunch, dinner, appetizers and beverages for prices that range from $1.50 for a “PBJ” to $17.95 for a 12-ounce rib eye black Angus steak.

There will be no loud music, though a football or baseball game playing on one of the many televisions may elicit enthusiasm. His intention, he said, is to provide a place for people to “watch the game, have good conversation and relax.”

And, of course, play golf.

The club is open daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
