Library workshop
AUBURN – Parents are invited to sign up at the Auburn Public Library for a workshop on Searchasaurus and Brittanica Online and learn about the helpful Web sites from 10 to 11 a.m. or 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 8.

Jaycees’ reception
AUBURN – The Lewiston/Auburn Jaycees will host an After-Work Reception from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 2, at the Blues Cafe to bring together young people between the ages of 18 and 40.
National Jaycee Vice President Chris Oldham of Arizona will be present. There will be networking opportunities and a chance to see what is happening in the community. Pianists’ program
AUBURN – The 2005-06 year for the Woman’s Literary Union, 19 Elm St., will begin at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 8, when the program will be “Norma Rice Gould and Friends at the Piano.”
Gould has been a piano teacher for more than 20 years and has been the organist at the United Methodist Church in Auburn for nearly 40 years. Darby and Jon Tuttle will join Gould at the piano.
They are the children of Jon and Emily Tuttle of Poland and attend St. Peter’s and Sacred Heart School in Auburn. Darby is in the second grade and has many interests, including reading, Brownie Girl Scouts and soccer. Jon is in the fourth grade and his interests include reading, Scouting and sports. He plays the organ as well as the piano. Darby has been playing the piano for one year and says, “Piano makes me happy!”
WLU hostesses for the meeting will be Margaret Nichols and Sylvia Plossay. Melanie Ness is in charge of the house decorations.
All WLU meetings are open to the public, and newcomers to the area are encouraged to attend.
Civil War talk
BRUNSWICK – The Chamberlain Civil War Round Table will hold its first meeting after the summer hiatus at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 8, at the Curtis Memorial Library, Morell Room, Pleasant Street.
The speaker will be Dr. Stephen R. Wise of Beaufort, S.C. Wise is an authority on blockade running during the American Civil War. His book, “Lifeline of the Confederacy: Blockade Running During the Civil War,” was acclaimed as a comprehensive account of the Confederate effort to deliver supplies through the northern blockade.
In honor of National Patriots Day, which memorializes those lost on Sept. 11, 2001, two member of the Falmouth American Legion Post 164 will do a presentation on the meaning behind each step of the folding of the national flag.
The 177th birthday of General Chamberlain on Sept. 8 will be recognized at the meeting. The public is welcome.
Theater sale
MONMOUTH – The Theater At Monmouth, the Shakespearean Theater of Maine, is seeking donations for its annual yard sale to be held from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 24 and 25, at the old Grange Hall, 775 Main Street.
The theater is collecting donations from homes and camps that would be suitable for a yard sale through Sept. 18. They can be dropped off at the Grange Hall. People can call 933-2952 to arrange pickup. The theater is asking that items donated be of value. All items donated are tax deductible.
The sale will include household items, furniture, books, antiques, costume pieces, props and an eclectic mix of items. All proceeds will support the work of the Theater At Monmouth. For more information, call the above number.
Play auditions
POLAND – The Poland Players will hold auditions for “Oklahoma.” The show requires performers of all ages, and members of the community are encouraged to try out.
Individuals should be prepared to sing a short song and/or to read from the script. Audition dates and times are 4 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7; 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 8; and 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13; or by appointment. The auditions will be held in the Poland Regional High School theater, 1453 Maine St.
