PARIS – Enterprise Maine President and Chief Executive Officer Brett Doney on Wednesday defended his decision to give the vice president of an affiliated organization six weeks off this summer.

The paid vacation granted to Barbara Olson, vice president of the Growth Council of Oxford Hills, was long overdue, he said. “Barb is our longest-standing employee other than me. She was our first hire. She’s been with us almost 11 years now.”

Over the years, Doney said, Olson has contributed countless hours to the organization. “I literally would have owed her a couple years if she’s been keeping track of comp time – maybe three years.”

In order to thank Olson as she completes her 10th year of service, Doney said, he actually offered her a choice of either a bonus or time off. “And luckily for us, she chose the time off,” he joked. The six weeks, he said, was a bargain.
