As Labor Day approaches interest becomes more intense in the grand celebration which will be given under the auspices of the Central Labor Union. And the day will be observed by all of the leading business concerns in the two cities. All of the mills, and all of the shoe shops will shut down for the day and while there are two or three factories in these cities that have hitherto continued business on Labor Day, this year they will join the vast majority and make the observation of Labor Day unanimous.

50 Years Ago, 1955

The Navy today released for publication a photograph taken from a rocket about 100 miles up showing a vast expanse of the United States and Mexico. In the picture too is an above-the-earth hurricane, shown in its entirety.

The horizon of the photograph extends 2,800 miles from Omaha, Neb., to the lower Gulf of California in Mexico. Parts of nine states and the whole of Texas are included in the 1¼ million square miles pictured.

25 Years Ago, 1980

Today is Labor Day, a holiday set apart to honor the men and women of America who form the work force which has made our industrial progress possible. This is the 98th year in which the observance takes place.

And since it always is on the first Monday in September, and today is Sept. 1, this is the earliest that Labor Day can fall.
