TURNER – We are saddened by the death of Daniel “Dan” Lovewell Poland Jr., 76, of 5 Poland Road, Turner, on Sept. 1, in his home, with his family by his side, after a courageous battle with cancer. A special thank you to his grandson, Heath Daniel Peare, CNA, MHT3, COTA, during this time.
He was born on Dec. 25, 1928, in Livermore, the son of Daniel Lovewell Poland Sr., and Lucy Ann Groves Poland.
He married Rosemarie Pray on Nov. 12, 1948, in Auburn. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend.
He was a veteran of the Army, serving in Hawaii T.5 FortKamp, Hhau, Hawaii, Medical Corps., and honorably discharged on June 25, 1947.
He was a lineman for Palmer Construction and worked for Reynolds Tree Co., before starting his own company, Dan’s Tree Service. After his retirement, he was a paper carrier for the Sun Journal and a volunteer at the Good Shephard Food-Bank.
He was an avid hunter (sometimes a little too avid), fisherman and gardener. He loved being outdoors, enjoying all of nature’s wonders. He was especially fond of dogs and often had his faithful beagle at his side. He enjoyed spending time at his camp in East Madrid with his family and friends. You could also catch up with him at any of his children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events. He was their proudest fan.
His passing is a huge loss to the following survivors, his daughters, Mrs. Gary (Brenda) Bennett of Oakland, Jann Poland Perkins and her fianc, John Driscoll, of Sabattus, Mrs. Lloyd (Kim Beth) Merchant of Turner and Mrs. Dale (Colleen) Bubier of New Gloucester; sons, Daniel L. Poland III, and Vicki of Greene, Craig G. Poland and Wanda of Turner, and Bradley B. Poland and Judi of Gorham; 19 grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and four great-grandchildren; two devoted sisters, Hazel May Binette and Helen Louise Hendricks, both of Auburn; his mother-in-law, Trudy G. Pray of Auburn; and many special friends.
He was predeceased by his father on Oct. 14, 1937; his mother on May 31, 1971; his wife, Rosemarie, on Nov. 9, 1994; his oldest son, Scott John Poland on April 22, 1969; a grandchild, Joshua Scott McCann of Turner on Jan. 24, 1991; sisters, Gladys May Poland on March 5, 1913, and Bertha Poland; and his brothers, Fred Ernest Poland on March 5, 1986, Ralph Lewis on Oct. 9, 1999 and Henry George Poland on April 6, 2003.
Please share a special memory of him whenever you gaze upon a beautiful flower, while watching a bluebird’s flight, the sound of the babbling brook or an old Hank Williams or Patsy Cline song. He will be in our hearts and our memories forever and always.
Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice lovingly helped care for him, and family and friends are encouraged to spend time with their loved ones; let them know, as Danny did, that they are loved, as he was.
