Ever since Somali people began to move into Lewiston, it has been an ongoing challenge to decrease bigotry and increase acceptance of our new neighbors. While we have made some progress, much remains to be done.

I was, therefore, appalled by the front-page story in the Sun Journal Aug. 27. There was absolutely no point to that story except to inflame negative attitudes toward Somali residents. If a Caucasian family in New Hampshire decided to move to Lewiston, for whatever reason, would anyone even notice?

The Sun Journal owes our whole community an apology.
