NEW LONDON, Conn. – The University of Southern Maine received goals from four different players to coast to a 4-1 victory over the United States Coast Guard Academy in women’s soccer action Friday.
The Huskies (1-0) opened the scoring in the eighth minute when senior midfielder Dianna Thibaudeau fed senior forward Eva Hanson.
The Bears tied the game in the 15th minute on an unassisted goal from senior Katie Lappe off a corner kick.
Junior midfielder Julia Cyr placed a perfectly-timed through pass to Liz Brunton, who beat sophomore goalkeeper Torie Lusardi to give the Huskies the lead for good in the 22nd minute.
USM protected its one-goal lead deep into the second half before getting a pair of unassisted insurance goals from freshman Regina Wilson and junior Danica Martin.
Hofstra 1, Maine 0
BOSTON, Mass. – Chrissy Arnone scored the game’s lone goal in the 71st minute to lift Hofstra to a 1-0 victory over Maine in women’s soccer action Friday.
The Black Bears (0-1) battled the Flying Dutchmen (1-0) quite evenly in the first half. Maine had a mere 5-3 advantage in shots on goal, and the corner kicks were were even at 1-1.
The Flying Dutchmen turned up the heat in the second half, taking 10 shots on goal and netting the one that did the trick. The Black Bears managed four shots in the frame.
Goalie Becky Wachsberger had two saves for Hofstra, while Tanya Adorno matched that tally in net for Maine.
Providence 4, Maine 0
KINGSTON, R.I. – Senior forward Eoin Lynch scored three goals as Providence ran away from Maine 4-0 in the first round of the URI/Sheraton Inn Men’s Soccer Classic.
Lynch’s first two goals gave the Friars a comfortable 2-0 lead at the half, and he converted a penalty kick in the 76th minute to complete the hat trick. Midfielder Ryan Maduro added the final goal of the game in the final minutes to clinch the win.
In other tournament play, Alabama-Birmingham downed host Rhode Island 3-1 as Sandy Gbandi and Two-Boys Gumede each notched a goal and an assist. Maine will face UAB on Sunday.
