TURNER – We are saddened by the death of Daniel Lovewell Poland Jr., 76, of 5 Poland Road, on Sept. 1, in his home with family after a courageous battle with cancer. A special thank you to his grandson, Heath Daniel Peare, CNA, MHT3, COTA, during this time.

Born on Dec. 25, 1928, in Livermore, he was the son of Daniel L. Poland Sr. and Lucy Groves Poland.

He married Rosemarie Pray on Nov. 12, 1948, in Auburn. He was wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in Hhau, Hawaii’s Medical Corp, honorably discharged on June 25, 1947. He was a lineman for Palmer Construction, and worked for Reynold’s Tree Co. before starting his own company, Dan’s Tree Service, plus he worked for the family of Bronson Griscom of Phillips for more than 50 years. After his retirement, he was a paper carrier for the Sun Journal and was a volunteer at the Good Sheppard Food Bank.

Dan was an avid hunter (sometimes a little too avid), angler and gardener. He loved being outdoors, enjoying all of nature’s wonders with his faithful beagle at his side. He enjoyed time at his camp in East Madrid with family and friends, and sporting events watching his children and grandchildren play. He was their proudest fan.

His passing is a huge loss to the following survivors, his daughters Mrs. Gary (Brenda) Bennett of Oakland, Jann Poland Perkins and her fianc, John Driscoll, of Sabattus, Mrs. Lloyd (Kim Beth) Merchant of Turner, and Mrs. Dale (Colleen) Bubier of New Gloucester; sons, Daniel L. Poland III and Vicki of Greene, Craig G. Poland and Wanda of Turner, and Bradley B. Poland and Judi of Gorham; 19 grandchildren; two step grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two devoted sisters, Hazel Binette and Helen Hendricks, both of Auburn; his mother-in-law, Trudy G. Pray, of Auburn; and many special friends, including Lloyd Griscom.

He was predeceased by his father on Oct. 14, 1937; his mother on May 31, 1971; his wife, Rosemarie, on Nov. 9, 1994; his oldest son, Scott John Poland, on April 22, 1969; a grandchild, Joshua McCann; sisters, Gladys and Bertha Poland; and brothers, Fred, Ralph and Henry Poland.

Please share a special memory of him whenever you gaze upon a beautiful flower, while watching a bluebird’s flight, the sound of the babbling brook, or an old Hank Williams or Patsy Cline song. He will be in our hearts and our memories forever and always.

Togus Veterans Hospital and Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice lovingly helped care for him. Family and friends are encouraged to spend time with their loved ones; let them know, as Danny did, that they are loved, as he was.
