TROY, N.Y. – Junior forward Adam Bial scored the game-winning goal in the waning minutes of the first half as the University of Southern Maine blanked Union College 1-0 in men’s soccer action on Saturday.

The Huskies (1-0) broke out on top with just 6:50 left in the first half when Bial collected a loose ball at the 18-yard line on the left side, took a touch and fired the ball past the goalkeeper.

Junior goalkeeper Chris Willard stopped all six shots on goal for the Huskies, two in the first half and four in the second to notch the shutout victory.

The Dutchmen (0-1) controlled the ball for much of the game, outshooting the Huskies 25-7, but the Dutchmen could not find the back of the net.

Field hockey

Hofstra 3, Maine 1

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Charlia Warner netted a game-high two goals to carry Hofstra to a 3-1 win over University of Maine in field hockey on Saturday.

Kasey Spencer found the back of the net on a feed from Kim Macdonald for the Black Bears’ (2-2) lone goal. Pemba Ramdoo scored an insurance goal late in the second half unassisted for Hofstra (3-0).

Plymouth State 2, Thomas 1

PLYMOUTH, NH – Senior Katie Kovacs scored the game-winning goal on a feed from Christina Farias with 8:36 remaining as Plymouth State defeated Thomas College 2-1 in a field hockey matchup on Saturday.

Molly Tibbetts scored the only goal in the first half to give Thomas a 1-0 lead at halftime. In the second half, Laurie Allinson scored the game-tying goal on a penalty stroke with 29 minutes left. Plymouth outshot Thomas 29-1.

Babson 3, USM 0

BABSON PARK, Mass. – Senior tri-captain Elise Conley scored a pair of goals to lead Babson College to a 3-0 victory over the University of Southern Maine in field hockey action on Saturday.

Conley wasted little time in providing her team a 1-0 lead as she scored off a rebound of first-year Annie Pease’s shot on the Beavers’ (1-1) second penalty corner just under three minutes into the contest.

The Beavers remained on the offensive for the entire first half, but the Huskies’ (0-1) first-year goalkeeper Natalie Nimon of Augusta kept her team close with six saves in the frame and eight overall.

The second half was dominated by midfield play as Conley tallied her second goal of the game and third of the season when she backhanded a shot just inside the right post with 23:39 remaining.

Women’s soccer

Gordon 1, USM 0

GORHAM – Chrissy MacArthur scored the only goal of the game 52 minutes into the second half to give Gordon College a 1-0 triumph over University of Southern Maine in women’s soccer on Saturday.

USM (1-1) had a great scoring opportunity, but Gordon’s goalie Mary Griffehagen stopped senior Dianna Thibaudeau’s shot from eight yards out. Griffehagen finished with three saves on the night. Mindy Morneault had two saves for the Huskies.

Wheaton 2, Husson 0

BANGOR – Ashley Furr found the back of the net on a pass from freshman Angelamaria Viscom to lead Wheaton to a 2-0 victory over Husson in women’s soccer on Saturday.

Also scoring for Wheaton was Jenna Rabesa. Wheaton controlled play throughout the game as it outshot the Eagles 29-2. Husson’s Tatyana Wolterbeek made 17 saves in net.
