David Farmer, in his editorial titled “Hate speech” on Aug. 26, called televangelist Pat Robertson a blowhard not one time, but twice. I think these statements are a bit harsh considering Mr. Farmer advocates sensitivity, tolerance, acceptance and freedom of speech.
The only mistake that Pat Robertson made was apologizing for what he said. I believe he meant what he said, but felt the pressure of the liberal media and gave in.
I know firsthand what this pressure feels like because I have been the subject of local controversy over the last decade. I have led Harry Potter protests, openly condemned an inner-city church for distributing condoms, was arrested at City Hall while trying to obtain a permit to oppose the white supremacists who visited Lewiston a few years ago and, let’s not forget, my recent crusade against Maine Public Broadcasting Network for airing an episode of “Postcards from Buster” featuring lesbian mothers.
Would I ever consider apologizing for my actions? The answer is absolutely not. When you feel so strongly about something and your mind is made up, there should not be any retracting your statements. I don’t know what sense there is in apologizing to your enemy, it’s not like it will be accepted, anyway. Personally, if I go down in the history books as a blowhard it’s OK with me.
God bless Pat Robertson.
