The blasting at the site of the new St. Peter’s Church that is to be erected on Bartlett street was completed on last Saturday. The work was done by David Lemieux, a Lewiston contractor and he blasted 4,280 yards at $1.39 a yard.

The foundation will be 165 feet long and from 80 to 100 feet in width. The average height will be 10 feet. In addition to the cathedral there is being built an addition to the monastery on College street extension. This will have a tower that will be twenty feet in height. A boiler house two and a half stories high will also be erected besides the cathedral and monastery. The wood work of these three buildings will be in charge of Louis Maloog of Lewiston.

Eisenhower said that on Labor Day this year all Americans are “humbly grateful for the twin blessings of peace and prosperity.”

“We honor all the working men and women of this country who with the hands, hearts and minds have contributed so much to our national welfare,” he said.

America’s annual tribute to its grandparents will be celebrated for the third time on Sunday, September 7 – and this newest official holiday is well on its way to acceptance as one of the nation’s favorite ways of honoring its forebears.

As the first new card-sending and gift-giving holiday in the United States in well over half a century (Mother’s Day and Father’s Day were both initially observed in 1908), Grandparents Day has been greeted with growing enthusiasm.
